Dress to Impress On Your First Date With These 4 Style Tips

You have butterflies in your stomach. You haven’t eaten all day. You can’t stop texting your friends.

Dress to imressI don’t know about you, but when I have a first date with a hot guy, all I think about is how I can impress him enough for a second date.

Now I know with everyone being on social media, the lure of finding out what your date looks like is long gone, but there’s still the excitement of dressing up and looking your best.

Here are four styling tips to help you impress your guy.

1. Wear Black

Wearing black makes you appear skinnier and also creates an elegant look. What I like to do, is wear a slim black knee-length skirt paired with a blouse or scarf that has a pop of color.

And don’t think you can just throw on something without thinking about it. Chiara Atik, author of “Modern Dating: a Field Guide,” says what you wear on your first date makes a lasting impression in men.

The first thing men notice is what you are wearing. Not your shoes or your purse, but whether you’re wearing something too loose or too tight, something sexy or over the top or whether you’re dressed too casually or too formal.

So take a little time and think about what you are wearing. Black is a universal color and is a safe option whether you’re going to the movies or to the Opera.

2. Wear A Statement Necklace

Statement necklace

Something that beautifully ties a simple outfit together is a statement necklace. It looks nice paired with a tank top, blazer, jeans and knee high boots. But it also pairs well with a little black dress.

You don’t have to spend a lot on jewelry either. Forever 21 has cute bracelets and necklaces at affordable rates. If you don’t want to wear a necklace, then try a statement ring.

Whatever you choose, whether it be a necklace, bracelet or ring, just remember to  keep it simple; one piece of jewelry is all you need (even if you think otherwise).

I’m going to tell you an embarrassing story to drive my point of simplicity.

In college, I had a date with a guy and I decided to accessorize my outfit with a spike bracelet and charm necklace. At the restaurant, as I was grabbing some appetizers, my date did the same and my bracelet cut his hand. And to add insult to injury, when I stood up, one of my charms seemed to have unhooked itself and landed in my calamari sauce.

I was a wreck, but I learned a valuable lesson: Keep it simple.

3. Stay Clear of Hairspray

One thing men love is hair they can easily run their hands through. Although you may feel you look better with a teased hairstyle, your man isn’t going to appreciate this.

An easy way to style your hair without going crazy with hair products is to use a hair straightener. You can straighten your hair, add waves or even add curls.

Lightly spritz your hair with a hair shiner to tame any frizz and be done with it.

Blazer first date4. Wear a Blazer

Ah, blazers. I’m not talking about your mother’s fussy blazers. Blazers today are sleek and sexy and they can add structure to your outfit.

Not sure if a blazer will look good on  you? Try taking a fashion quiz to find out what styles will flatter your figure.

What’s nice about a blazer is that:

  • It’s versatile – Wear it at work and for a girls night out. Use blazers to dress down or dress up an outfit.
  • It can create a pop of color – Printed blazers are great with a solid color shirt and a pair of dark denim jeans. Similarly, a bright magenta blazer can look sexy with a  white maxi dress.
  • Looks great with heels – Pair a bold blazer with standout heels.

Going on first dates is exciting and fun. Keep your wardrobe simple and let your personality shine. Most men don’t want to see a polished and “fake” looking woman. They’d rather see a woman they can take home to meet the family.
